In January, I traveled to Arizona to celebrate the cowgirl way of life at Art of the Cowgirl. AOTC exists to preserve and promote the cowgirl way of life, bringing together masters and students of horsemanship and every kind of cowgirl art, from hat making to sculpting to saddle making. The January event included equine competitions (including World’s Greatest Horsewoman), workshops with artists, presentations from leaders in the western industry, and great shopping with over 100 vendors. I worked at the Cowgirls with Cameras booth with Cara Taylor Swift (Fast Horse Photography) while Phyllis Burchett (Phyllis Burchett Photo) and Kim Beer (Kim Beer Photography) taught the photography workshop for Art of the Cowgirl. Cara, Phyllis, and Kim formed Cowgirls with Cameras to teach equine photography through workshops, retreats, and mentorships. This video from Western Horseman features Cowgirls with Cameras and one of their photoshoots at the event. What an exciting highlight of the week! I took a couple of extra days to explore the Arizona landscape and also snuck away from the booth a few times for photos at AOTC. We were also able to photograph cowgirls from the Cowgirls Historical Foundation out in the desert. It was such a blessing to be able to spend time with my three photography mentors and try new photography techniques at the event. I hope my photos inspire you to consider attending a future AOTC event.
